New search methodology for evidence syntheses

Latest chapter in the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis 2024 edition

The JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis has added a new chapter, Search methodology for JBI evidence syntheses, providing essential guidance for academics and researchers to conduct systematic reviews and scoping reviews.

The new chapter addresses the fundamental role that effective search strategies play in the overall validity of evidence synthesis and includes guidance for selecting appropriate databases; structuring searches for optimal results; collaborating with information professionals; and documenting search processes effectively.

JBI 3 step search strategy

Amanda Ross-White, Information Scientist at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, and chair of the JBI Information Science Methodology Group, explained that the chapter aims to clarify common queries faced by review teams:

"Getting into all the potential permutations of a search is challenging, but this chapter will hopefully answer many of the most pressing questions a review team might have, such as where and what databases to search, how to structure a search to give the best results, and what ways an information professional might help. The intent is to give a broad overview, so regardless of the type of review, nature of your question, or capacity of your review team, you'll have a strong starting point for your searching."

The JBI Information Science methodology group members are expert searchers from around the globe, who all have experience working with systematic review teams.  Explaining the motivation behind the new chapter, Ross-White said, “We wanted to take our expertise and put it into a format that others could use as the basis for their reviews”.

“We have members from every continent and also work with our colleagues in the Campbell Collaboration and the Cochrane Collaboration to provide guidance on expert searching and information retrieval. In addition to working on this chapter, we share knowledge about best practices in searching, review one another’s searches to ensure completeness and solve complicated search challenges. Anyone with an interest in search methods is welcome to join us!”

The JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis is a comprehensive resource that provides detailed guidance on conducting various types of systematic reviews, including scoping reviews, qualitative reviews, and mixed-methods reviews.
