Clinicians discussing Evidence Implementation

Adopting evidence into practice

The FAME approach

Implementing evidence to drive real change in healthcare practice can be a complex and highly challenging process. JBI considers evidence-based healthcare as decision-making that considers the feasibility, appropriateness, meaningfulness and effectiveness (FAME) of recommended healthcare practices, a framework emphasised in the JBI Model of Evidence-based Healthcare.

The process of evidence-based practice is complex and often repetitive, requiring different types of evidence throughout all stages, with ongoing review and change required throughout the planning, evaluation and sustainability phases.

In a new editorial, Dr Hu Yan, Director of the Fudan University Centre of Evidence-based Nursing, a JBI Centre of Excellence, explores how utilising the FAME framework can strengthen the implementation team's capacity and capability to effectively address three core areas, illustrated through implementation project case studies.

The three core areas include:

  • Overall consideration of evidence and context when developing the implementation protocol
  • Reaching agreement with stakeholders when planning change, and
  • Providing methodological support when developing strategies to overcome barriers

"A FAME analysis is a critical mechanism that optimizes internal resources and external collaboration to promote practice in line with evidence and to achieve clinical outcomes that are sustainable,” says Dr Hu Yan.
