Osaka celebrates the strength of Collaboration
2019 marks the 10th anniversary of The Japan Centre for Evidence Based Practice: A JBI Affiliated Group
Ten year marriage anniversaries are traditionally celebrated with gifts of tin and aluminium to symbolise strength and flexibility, and to represent longevity of the relationship.
Together with The Japan Centre for Evidence Based Practice, we celebrate not only longevity, but also the Group’s enduring success and achievements, and the strength of our affiliation and friendship.
Associate Professor Miyae Yamakawa is the Convenor of The Japan Centre for Evidence Based Practice, which is hosted by Osaka University. She reflects on the JBI Affiliated Group’s beginnings:
“Our founding Convenor was motivated to combine scientific thought with clinical practice because they saw that this was siloed; they realised that for the research to be meaningful, it needed to be used at the point of care. For myself, I also saw that researchers in universities were distinguishing science and clinical work as separate entities. I wanted to have an impact in guiding evidence-based healthcare into the clinical setting.”
Since its founding in 2009, the Group has grown in number and strength, but remains consistent in its drive to have an impact in facilitating evidence-based practice in clinical settings: “I am proud that we continuously strive to spread the evidence-based practice spirit throughout Japan” said Associate Professor Yamakawa.
The “evidence-based practice spirit” is certainly spreading throughout Japan, and is testimony to the strength of the JBI Collaboration as a global network of colleagues and peers who are passionate about advancing evidence-based healthcare. Associate Professor Yamakawa has drawn on the encouragement and friendship from the JBI Collaboration from the very beginning:
“The stand out is Professor Patraporn Tungunkom from The Thailand Centre for Evidence Based Health Care: A JBI Affiliated Group. We are a match made in heaven! Patraporn encouraged us to focus on evidence-based practice ten years ago when there was only one Centre in Japan. This has now grown to three.”
The Group is dedicated to advancing evidence-based healthcare in Japan and globally, and shares JBI’s Vision of ‘Better Evidence. Better Outcomes. Brighter Future. It is a ‘brighter future’ that guides the Group’s mission today:
“Japans life expectancy is 81.25 years for men and 87.32 years for women, and this is because we have excellent health insurance and medical treatment. Our nurses are tidy and serious, and are dexterous in their ability to care, thereby providing excellent care. Having said that, there is still more to be done in evidence-based practice and we are determined to improve this by working hard for our future”, says the Group Convenor.
We are certain that Associate Professor Yamakawa, together with Deputy Convenor Dr Hiroko Watanabe and all the dedicated staff of The Japan Centre for Evidence Based Practice: A JBI Affiliated Group, will continue to strive for a ‘brighter future’ as a valued member of the JBI Collaboration. We look forward to that ‘brighter future’ with them.
“The JBI family and its global Collaboration continue to be a helpful network amongst researchers and for our Group. JBI provides excellent resources, which continuously provide us with knowledge on the best evidence-based practice and evidence-based care. This is powerful in that the knowledge brings hope to patients and gives them confidence in the treatments and care provided. The JBI Collaboration is the greatest strength we have”, says Associate Professor Yamakawa.
