A multidisciplinary approach to healthy ageing in Italy
A second Italian JBI Collaborating Entity has recently been established and we are thrilled to welcome our newest members.
The University of Piemonte Orientale for Healthy Aging: A JBI Affiliated Group is based in Novara, Italy, and is a satellite campus of the University of Piemonte Orientale (UPO). Novara is a city of approximately 104,000 people situated in Piedmont Region, northern Italy. Novara is a city rich in history, with a towering basilica and numerous palaces housing some of the city’s museums and galleries.
The university as we know it today was founded in 1998, but the region’s first studium generale (university) dates back to 1228: it was the seventh to be established in Italy and the 12th in Europe. Today, UPO is distinguished as a ‘glocal open campus’, embracing networking and connections on a global scale while remaining deeply connected to its local origins. Integration, inclusion and equality stand as the core values that motivate UPO to cultivate an environment where individuals can flourish, gaining in both knowledge and personal experience.
Professor Alberto Dal Molin, convenor of the new JBI Affiliated Group, aims to establish a new group of researchers associated with JBI to focus on evidence-based practice relating to healthy ageing from a multidisciplinary perspective. He emphasises the significance of collaborating within a multi-professional and interdisciplinary group to enhance understanding of issues from different perspectives, as well as to assist in effectively improving and implementing evidence-based practice knowledge.

Each core member of the JBI Affiliated Group will have an active role in both the affiliation process and in ongoing projects. They aim to integrate the JBI approach into the research activities of the Department of Translational Medicine at UPO, which has been actively involved in the AGING Project. This project is focused on the scientific and social challenges of ageing based on four pillars: interdisciplinary, translationally, support for research and teaching, and involvement of the territory. Professor Dal Molin sees the collaboration between UPO and JBI as key to their aims:
Our JBI affiliation means that we have the opportunity to develop high-quality evidence synthesis according to the JBI methodology and promote evidence translation into practice by collaborating with clinical partners. Secondly, it allows the group to expand the network of the scientific community and create new collaborations. This expansion is crucial for sharing, promoting and supporting evidence-based practice and healthcare.
The University of Piemonte Orientale for Healthy Aging: A JBI Affiliated Group, has an exciting future ahead and we look forward to watching it make an impact in the important area of healthy ageing.
