Methodology Month

Latest developments highlighted during March

JBI Methodology Month highlights the latest developments from JBI’s unique methodologies and the free access JBI resources available to students, clinicians, researchers, policymakers and anyone interested in evidence-based decision making and evidence-based practice.

A number of special releases will take place during JBI Methodology Month, including:

  • The 2024 edition of the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis which includes updated methodological guidance and a number of new sections.

  • The revised JBI critical appraisal tool for the assessment of risk of bias for quasi-experimental studies

A paper on the revised tool, 'The revised JBI critical appraisal tool for the assessment of risk of bias for quasi-experimental studies', will be published for Methodology Month. This paper is accompanied by another publication this month, 'Common tool structures and approaches to risk of bias assessment: Implications for systematic reviewers'. A video abstract is provided for this paper by lead author, Dr. Jennifer Stone:

  • Three new critical appraisal tools for systematic reviews of textual evidence. Textual evidence synthesis methodologists discuss the 3 new tools:

  • Special methodology issue of JBI Evidence Synthesis, which includes methodology papers such as Implementing the GRADE approach in systematic reviews that adhere to JBI methodological conduct and much more, as Managing Editor, Mara Lambert explains:

Throughout JBI Methodology Month recordings of presentations from JBI iGNITE will also be released. JBI iGNITE, a two-day symposium on EBHC methodology, was held for the first time in November 2023. Presentations that are being released this month include:

-    What are reporting guidelines for health research, and do they work? – Prof David Moher

-    Transforming evidence for policy - Prof Ruth Stewart

-    Reinvigorating stagnant science: implementation laboratories and a meta-laboratory – Dr Noah Ivers

-    Knowledge translation among public health decision makers - Prof Maureen J. Dobbins

-    Living on the edge: exploring possible futures of evidence synthesis – Prof Tari Turner

-    Delivering for impact: Reflections from Review Collaboration – Prof Peter Bragge

Recordings of the rapid fire methodology sessions from JBI iGNITE are being released in March for Methodology Month also, including 'Advancing implementation science in co-contribution':

In addition, a JBI LIVE webinar in association with Wolters Kluwer Health, Pioneering integration of implementation methodology in Doctorate of Nursing Programs, will be announced and open for registrations.

More free access resources will be disseminated across social media and in the next issue of JBI Buzz to be released at the end of this month.

About JBI Methodology

JBI methodology is underpinned by JBI’s unique approach to evidence-based healthcare. JBI considers evidence-based healthcare as decision making that considers the Feasibility, Appropriateness, Meaningfulness as well as Effectiveness (FAME) of healthcare practices.

The diverse origins of problems in healthcare require a diversity of research methodologies - not all questions can be answered from studies measuring effectiveness alone. JBI has developed eight rigorous review methodologies.

These methodologies are available in the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. A free online resource, the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis gives step-by-step guidance to conduct and prepare trustworthy and reliable evidence syntheses. The JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis is just one of the free access resources that will be highlighted during #JBIMethodology Month on social media.
