Enhancing patient care in Central China
The JBI Collaboration welcomes its first JBIC Entity situated in a public hospital in central China
Interest in joining the JBI Collaboration (JBIC) continues to grow around the world, and the 10th Chinese JBIC Entity, the Henan Evidence-based Nursing Centre: A JBI Affiliated Group, was recently welcomed into the JBI Collaboration. This is the first JBIC Collaborating Entity situated in a public hospital in central China.
Henan is regarded as one of the cradles of Chinese civilisation, with over 3200 years of recorded history, and today is the third most populous province in China. Living and working in such a large region means that there are great demands on the healthcare sector. Professor Hongmei Zhang, the Convenor of the Henan Evidence-based Nursing Centre, says the Henan Provincial People’s Hospital, with more than 5500 beds, provides medical care to around 3.36 million outpatients each year, supported by a team of over 3700 nurses.
As a member of the JBIC, the Centre's aim is to use evidence summaries to translate, localise and apply evidence in clinical nurse settings, and more effectively care for their patients by promoting the JBI Approach which is conceptualised in the JBI Model of Evidence-based Healthcare within nursing education:
We see that the promotion, implementation and dissemination of JBI evidence-based resources will have a positive influence in the care and management of the people in Henan.
Professor Zhang states that, in Henan, they have identified four clinical problems requiring specific focus and improvement:
1. chronic disease and health management
2. emergency and intensive nursing
3. perioperative nursing; and
4. maternal-child nursing.
By utilising JBI’s resources and implementing JBI methodologies, the Centre is confident in their ability to develop a range of clinical practice guidelines as well as updating existing evidence by using the best evidence-based knowledge available. Their approach also involves prioritising patient and caregiver engagement by facilitating decision-making throughout the process of evidence synthesis, transfer, and implementation.
As well as improving the care of patients directly, the new JBI Affiliated Group also plans to work with their partner hospitals, community health service centres, nursing associations, product development companies, and colleges and universities within the province. They see their role as introducing the best global evidence using JBI methods and methodologies to influence the care of people both directly and indirectly.
Henan Evidence-based Nursing Centre is affiliated with the Nursing Department of Henan Provincial People's Hospital. The centre is led by Professor Hongmei Zhang (Convenor) and Associate Professor Weihua Liu (Deputy Convenor).
We warmly welcome Professor Zhang and team to the JBIC and wish them all the best as they spread the good work of JBI and improve the health and well-being of the people of Henan.
